This is to be a momentous occasion.
Two government minders, in black suits, stoically stand at the entrance of the Tech Pit. The slight bulge of their guns are all but imperceptible to the untrained eye. In the Pit, scientists and their technicians purposefully review the information presented on the multiple displays and scopes that make up the periphery of the pit. Knobs are minutely adjusted based on the information displayed. Intent murmuring gently fills the tech pit. Nothing is being left to chance.
The Observation Deck is located directly across from the Tech Pit. It is separated from the proceedings by height - it overlooks the test area and the Tech Pit - and reinforced glass. The personnel gathered within fall into one of four categories: 1. Men of power. 2. Their guards. 3. Site liaisons. 4. Site security forces.
Security was of the utmost importance.
Silence descended on the those gathered in the Observation Deck as below, in the test area, a hydraulic door slid open and the subject was escorted in. The appearance of the subject had a different effect in the Pit; excitement filled it's air.
The Test Area is brightly lit... too bright. My eyes take a moment to adjust. It was one thing to sit in a room discussing "the event" with the staff and quite another to be in the actual live situation. Despite myself, my fears, I am excited. Still, that fear is a knot coiling itself around my stomach.
The large cavernous Test Area is meticulously laid out. The floor is marked with paint, tape, letters and numbers; none of it makes sense to me. The only thing that does lies at the center
